Questions & Answers

How Much Does It Cost to Refinish Hardwood Floors?

As of 2026, Only Wood Floors charges $6.75 per square foot for natural hardwood floor refinishing and $8.25 per square foot for stained refinishing.

Both include sanding and three coats of commercial-grade polyurethane.

Can Engineered Hardwood Floors Be Refinished?

Yes, some engineered hardwood floors can be refinished — but not all of them.

This is one of those questions where experience really matters.

Unlike solid hardwood, engineered hardwood has a layer of real hardwood on top of a plywood or engineered core. That top layer is called the wear layer.

Should I Refinish or Replace My Hardwood Floors?

If your existing hardwood floors are structurally sound and have enough usable wood remaining, refinishing is often a better and more affordable option than replacing them. Scratches, discoloration, worn finishes and even certain types of damage can often be repaired.

However, floors with extensive structural damage, severe deterioration or insufficient wood thickness may need replacement.
